Since 2011, Friends of George’s has produced original, drag-centric performances, comedy sketches, and plays. Every camp-filled production raises thousands of dollars for other Mid-South organizations that support and affirm the LGBTQIA+ population.

On June 2, 2023, Friends of George’s won its lawsuit against Tennessee when a federal judge struck down a law banning drag performances across the state. The court deemed the anti-drag law to be unconstitutional as it violated rights granted by the
First Amendment. Friends of George’s immensely thanks its generous attorneys: Brice Timmons, Melissa Stewart, their colleagues at the Donati Law Firm and elsewhere for their counsel, tireless dedication, and unwavering allyship.

The Friends of George’s case has since been cited in legal victories nationwide against states that attempted to silence the LGBTQ+ community by suppressing free speech. Thus far, constitutional liberties, queer people and allies have prevailed over bigotry.

Since Friends of George’s foray into the courtroom, our entirely volunteer-driven theatre company has been fortunate to receive recognition, awareness, and support from around the world. Recent honors include receiving the 2023 Defender Award from the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund and the Dramatists Guild of America, being named a 2023 NOW Awards honoree by Condé Nast’s them magazine, and being invited to perform and kick off Pride month at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. More than ever, Pride is still a protest.

The Friends of George’s case is currently under review by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals since the state of Tennessee filed an appeal. Because of this, our legal journey is not yet over, and any additional support is welcome and appreciated as we continue this fight.
